Abstract

Here is a short checklist of SEO steps from one to seven. One of the aims of the SCOOTER project was to set up a process for using search engine optimisation (SEO) to promote and distribute our open educational resources on the internet. This document is a synthesis of our experiences over the past year, and although many of our appoaches are based on commercial SEO techniques, we have adapted these to an academic setting where particularly resourcing of such activities will potentially be quite different.

The guidelines are written by Dr Vivien Rolfe and Dr Simon Griffin, and Simon is an experienced technologist and SEO consultant.

Update November 2017 - Google algorithms which dictate the ranking of websites has changed several times since this guide was written. This SCOOTER website saw great success in beinkg ranked highly for the main search terms e.g. 'sickle cell anaemia', but today it is lower down. That doesn't matter so much as many of the resources - particularly video - are highly retrievable via YouTube, and as the site has become established, we have needed to rely on SEO less and less.

I do however think many of these principles are still useful for content discovery and you could apply them to your own work, or to make your research more discoverable.
